I tuck you in. Youngest One. And this is what I tell you:
All the reasons I love you….
I love the way you giggle…full force. No hesitation…no holding back. So unlike us big, self composed people.
Simple, pure joy bubbling out.
I love the way you smile at anyone, everyone, ear to ear. Not because they deserve it, or can offer you anything, or as a thank you or a social courtesy…but just because….your happy.
I love your kindness. How you never purposefully, intentionally try to be mean. Cruel. Hurt feelings. My prayer….that you never learn the unforgiving politics so prevalent in this world.
How innocent are your ways. Filled with grace…..
I love how you are quick to care. If someone is hurt…you nurture. Putting band-aides on their wounds. Showing concern. Trying to tend and care for them…even if its our four footed, fuzzy friend.
I think….“Did I ever tell you, your biological mom was a nurse…before falling into the world?“ No…but one day, when the time is right….I will.
I love your name that means, “Victorious” and “Heard by God.” I tell the story of before we found you and when you cried, or were in need, or just plain lonely….and you were heard by God.
I share how God made the universe. The tips of the mountains to the depths of the oceans. How He made every living thing….from big elephants…to bugs unseen.
Yet, He watches over you….
I say….
I love the way you run with fast feet of fury toward anything and everything. Toward life….
Unafraid.
How you are like me. Yet, different.
I value the mom which gave you life.
I tell you how I am thankful. How you came for the purpose…to know God, love God, serve God.
How He is only goodness. And how we are blessed beyond measure because of your presence.
I share how God created you. In womb. Protecting you until you came to us.
How you have a mission to pursue….one that no one in the world can do.
A purpose. A plan. From God. How He is near in the stillness of your room.
And I recall, how you tell me prior (age 4) how God speaks. You tell me, “when I talk to God….He talks to me back”. And a little flamboyantly you question….
“God talks to people. Didn’t you know that mom?”
Yes, I say. I did. And He does.
You are His. And I whisper in your ear before parting…
“So glad you are my girl.”
And you reply, “So glad you are my mom.”
A last, “I love you”.
And I turn off of the light.
Gratitude bubbling over…..voice fading…As I turn and say,
“Goodnight”.

Hi Jen – So beautiful. I agree with Steph about keeping this as a printed memory. I’m sure she would love to look back on this as one of those precious moments.

Keep depositing all those beautiful words in her “bank account”…because as we know…the world comes to rob…steal.. and withdraw from little girls as they move into womanhood…
